TOPIC: Practice Planning

Coaches are encouraged to plan their practices in advance.  What is it that you plan to accomplish?  How will you accomplish it?  What do you need to accomplish it?  I always plan my practices in advance and try to have a drill or contest for the following areas: 1) throwing the ball, 2) catching the ball, 3) base running, 4) fielding the ball, and 5) hitting the ball.  Below is a link to a sample practice plan.

Above is a great PowerPoint presentation on baseball skill fundamentals that was put together by our own WYB Coach Matt Wajda.  It covers: catching the ball, throwing the ball, fielding ground balls, fielding fly balls, and hitting fundamentals.   This is a definite must see!

The above presentation is courtesy of Coach Adam Rosen from Marietta College.  Coach Rosen is the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.  Coach Rosen works with infielders and hitters.  Coach Rosen came to Marietta College after being the assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Ky.  Before his time in Danville, Coach Rosen was an assistant coach at Capital University in Columbus for two years. Prior to his stint with the Crusaders, he served for two seasons as an assistant at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga.

Coach Rosen has been an instructor at many college baseball camps including Clemson, Appalachian State, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Elon and Dayton.  Coach Rosen played collegiately at Maryville College in Tennessee. Following his senior year, he was named second team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association as a utility player. In addition to first team All-Region honors, Rosen was named the Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Year after setting six Maryville records as an infielder and pitcher.

Coach Rosen presented this material at a Coaches Clinic at Otterbein on January 20, 2013.  I found it very informative and I think you will too.

TOPIC - Introduction

My name is Tom Hirschy and I have been asked to provide some resources for baseball coaches this season.  I am the current coach for the U-10 Worthington Nationals.  My past baseball coaching experience has been primarily at the youth level.  I have coached for WYB in the coach pitch program, recreational kid pitch program, recreational fall ball program, and the travel baseball program.  In addition, I have coached Little League baseball (9-12 age group).  I currently have three sons in the WYB Travel Baseball Program (U-9, U-10, and U-13).

My plan is to provide coaches with a number of different resources throughout the season.  These resources will include: practice plan examples, links to instructional videos, PowerPoint presentations, and other resources.

My purpose is not to tell you how to coach.  My purpose is to provide you with some helpful resources and some occasional insight to aid or support you in your coaching.

My focus will be a lot on the basic fundamentals of baseball: throwing, catching, fielding, running, hitting, and the mental aspect of the game.

I will soon start to post resources for coaches.  In the meantime, catchers and pitchers have already reported ... It's Baseball season!!!
